The Laser Periodontal Treatment™ Procedure

Surgery with PerioLase® is a straightforward laser dentistry procedure performed at our practice.  First, Dr. Shlafer applies a local anesthetic.  Next, he uses the PerioLase® laser to gently clear away diseased tissue from the gums and jawbone. This is a quick, virtually painless step that requires no cutting of the gum tissue.  The PerioLase® laser aids in blood clotting, forming a barrier that expedites the healing process and eliminates the need for sutures. After modifying the diseased tissue, the dentist smoothes the tooth's root to prevent future tartar buildup.  Finally, the treated area is left to heal.  Most patients can return to work the same day as the procedure, and many patients recover fully in as little as two weeks.

Cavity Detection

Dr. Shlafer provides patients from Detroit, Livonia, and Farmington with laser dentistry technology that detects cavities hidden below the tooth's surface.  By emitting light at a wavelength that specifically highlights tooth decay below the enamel, the laser enables our dentist to detect and fill hidden cavities before they cause excessive damage to the tooth, without scraping or prodding the tooth enamel.
