What are dental implants?
Dental implants are artificial replacements for the roots of missing teeth. The implant apparatus has three components: a titanium post that screws into the jawbone and a metal ball attached to the post that rests above the gums. For implant-supported full and partial dentures, a nylon O-ring acts as a retention between the ball and the denture. Alternately, for implant-supported crowns, there is a custom abutment that affixes the crown to the implant. Patients who need to have dental implants placed can contact our Detroit-area practice for referrals to excellent oral surgeons, who will gently insert the titanium post into the jawbone in a minimally invasive surgical procedure. After the implant has been inserted and the implant site allowed to heal (typically 4-6 months), Dr. Shlafer affixes the artificial tooth or teeth, oftentimes a porcelain crown, to the implant or implants. Once the complete tooth restoration is in place, it feels secure and completely natural and can last indefinitely.
