What Are Dental Implants

implants

Dental implants are artificial replacements and are the newest and most natural method available to replace your missing teeth. They are considered to be an improvement over previous technologies such as dentures and fixed bridges. Dental implants are thought of as the most cosmetically appealing and they feel natural without harming your other teeth.

Dental implants are a better long-term solution for your missing teeth. Small titanium posts are placed in your jaw and given time to fuse with your bone. This takes anywhere from three to six months. Afterward, your dental implants cannot be removed without additional surgery. This makes them far sturdier than dentures. Because dental implants mimic the structure of your natural tooth root, they are able to stimulate bone and tissue regrowth. The titanium structure also makes your tooth resistant to decay. These factors combined make them a better, long-term solution for your missing teeth than both dentures and fixed bridges.

In order to understand the benefits of implant dentistry, you need to know how dental implants work. They are composed of three different parts:

The Implant

The implant is a small titanium post that we surgically place into your jaw. Because titanium is naturally compatible with your body, after three to six months your dental implants will become integrated with the bone mass. This creates a structure that is very similar to your natural tooth root.

The Abutment

The abutment is a piece that is attached to each of your dental implants. It is exposed just above your gum line.

The Crown

Finally, the crown is placed over your abutment. The crown is often made of porcelain and looks just like your natural tooth.

Dental implants look and function very much like your natural teeth. It is not uncommon if you have dentures or fixed bridges to become curious about implant dentistry. When you finally make the switch, the results are virtually always positive. Dental implants provide a number of benefits including:

Increased Stability

Dental implants do not slip around in your mouth as dentures do. This eliminates the likelihood of embarrassing moments and makes it easier to speak and chew food.

Increased Comfort

Dentures are made from foreign materials such as plastic and acrylic, which can irritate to your gums. Dental implants are made from titanium, which is naturally compatible with your body.

Sustainability

Both dentures and fixed bridges have a 30 percent failure rate within the first five to seven years. Dental implants, however, never need to be replaced.

Traditional procedures pose a risk of complications. Implant dentistry, however, promotes overall oral health. The presence of a natural structure in your jaw helps to preserve the bone and soft tissue. Once in place, dental implants can last an entire lifetime with proper care.

Our Happy Patients

"I was going to another dentist who didn't quite get it... after switching to Dr. Shlafer I now know how THE BEST DENTIST ever operates! Dr. Shlafer first treated me for a bite-issue that would not go away. Soon after my first visit I was pain-free! Recently I had an area where food often got stuck - after Dr. Shlafer worked his magic I no longer have that issue. I drive all the way from Highland Township to see Dr. Shlafer -- and, it's well worth it. No matter where you live Dr. Shlafer is the ONLY dentist that I'd recommend. Thanks Doc!"

Rick S Rick S.

"The staff here is stellar. I've been going here for years now and have never had a bad experience. The women at the desk greet everyone by name, and the doctor remembers everything you tell him about yourself. Everyone here knows what they're doing, a trip here is never a hassle, and they'll always keep your best interest in mind."

Marc B Marc B.

"I am a patient of Dr. Shlafer and he has helped me tremendously. I had to have a lot corrective dentistry done and I sought out Dr. Shlafer to take on the challenge. I have told many people that he is a master in his field. He pays attention to the details and is extremely skilled in his craft way beyond normal denistry. I send all my friends and family to him especially if there is something out of the ordinary that needs to be done. He has advanced training and can take on serious issues."
